Featured Artisan: Sandra Yemm
Textures Craftworks presents Jewel-Lushus
from May 6 to 26, featuring wearable art by Grimsby artisan, Sandra Yemm.
Just in time for
Mother’s Day, Sandra dedicates this show to honouring motherhood
and the influence of mothers in society. The tradition of “mother’s day” is inspired
by the ancient practice where people returned to their ‘mother church’ for a
service to be held on Laetare Sunday. Anyone who did this was commonly said to
have gone "a-mothering". Children and young people who were in
service as household servants, were given a day off on that date so they could
visit their families. The children would pick wild flowers along the way to
place in the church or give to their mothers. Eventually the religious
tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts
to mothers.

Sandra’s studio, “Jewels by Sandra”, is
located in Grimsby, Ontario where the motto is ‘Friendly by Nature’. “My
‘jewels’ are inspired by nature. I was raised on a rural Ontario farm where I
experienced the music of the land - up close and personal. My most vivid
memories are of the fields, the woods and streams – gardens of colour – ever
changing with the seasons. My
reflections of that time, as well as my experiences today, living among the
naturescape of the Niagara Escarpment deeply influence my jewel designs.
Spring is a time of budding and renewal - when
new plants spring up after the winter; the early tones of green and white
giving new life to our surroundings.

I have been creating in some form for as
long as I can remember – my earliest memory as a child is molding dishes from
the clay I found around our farm pond. Today, designing and hand-making
wearable jewel art is my passion. My jewels feature intuitively free-formed
patterns using wire weaving and crocheted fine wire techniques interwoven with
rudiments of earthiness - pearls, gemstones, crystals, shells and metals.
I love the freedom to create as I go -
every piece is different and sometimes the result is unexpected and more unique
than the last. I like the surprises and engagement that the mixing of colours
and textures brings – the drama and subtleties. I feel my free-form designs
impart a feeling of lightness and optimism while at the same time have a grounding
effect.
Summer, from the Old Norse word summarsdag
gives us lots of sunshine and the longest days – when fruits and vegetables are
abundant. The earth is saturated with a more intense colour palate – a time for
colourful outdoor festivals and entertaining.
Autumn brings the time for reaping and
harvesting the main crops of the year. The old English name for this season of
harvest was replaced by the Latin Autumnus in the 16th century - also known as
Fall, as this is the time the temperature falls and leaves fall from the trees.
We see colours changing to deeper shades - orange to reds, brown to rusts, and
cream to browns.
Winter is the season of wind and white
snow, hence the name winter. Its essence is shown through colour scales of
neutral, gray, white and brown - the land sleeps.
I am deeply inspired through the principles
of Feng Shui, the Oriental art of placement and design. This ancient art
embodies the principle that all aspects of one’s emotional, physical and
spiritual life are intertwined with the energetics of our surroundings. I have
this principle in mind when I am creating; therefore, the placement of specific
elements in each design will have an aesthetic and emotional effect on both the
wearer and the observer.
My jewel designs are a culmination of influences
from nature and my studies in colour and design - elements which I have used
creatively in dress and millinery design, photography, flower design, interior
decorating, landscaping, pottery and encaustic painting.
