Oh, Canada!

Hi friends of Textures!

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of Confederation, when Canada became a country separate from the British Empire on July 1, 1867.

On that date, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada were united into a single country independent from England. Over the course of a century, Canada gradually shed its dependence on the United Kingdom until becoming fully independent in 1982, the same year that Canada Day became an official holiday.

Canada Day took decades to catch on due to the fact that many early Canadians identified themselves as British. It was not until Canada's "golden" anniversary in 1917 that an official celebration was recorded. The next Canada Day festivities did not occur until ten years later, in 1927.

The government's first recognition of the holiday occurred in 1958 with a trooping of the colour on Parliament Hill. The first country-wide celebration was in 1967, Canada's 100th anniversary. From that point on, Canada Day grew and evolved to become the widespread holiday it is today.

Canada Day is now a national statutory holiday celebrated in all provinces and territories and it is a day off for most businesses, including the artisans of Textures Craftworks.

While we are taking a short break, why not check out our "Oh, Canada!" photo album on Facebook, and if you haven't already 'Liked' our page, why not do so while you are there?  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.771716056207080.1073741834.196950247017000&type=1

In the meantime, if you are looking for something to do locally, check out the Canada Day Celebration and Fireworks from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Bayfront and Pier 4 Parks in Hamilton. For more details on that, see:

My Paw...

A Bear for Punishment - Father's Day:

Father's Day 2014 (Sunday, June 15) is almost upon us, so we would be remiss if we didn't give you some Textures Craftworks ideas for remembering the super man in your life!

Take-out sushi from his favourite restaurant and a new sushi set from Textures!

A cyber clock for dad's office...

Celtic wood sculpture for the wall of the den...

An Asian-themed raku tile!

Technically these are Tooth Fairy dishes, but they would also be great as a ring dish or somewhere to place an ear stud - or a gum catcher?

...For the Hamilton Bulldogs fan!

A fused glass serving bowl and tongs, along with a special take out salad from Goodness Me Natural Foods at 176 Locke St. S. for the foodie dad!

Instrument-themed art for the music lover...

...or perhaps a guitar plate for the aspiring musician in the family, along with a gift certificate for music lessons from Picks and Sticks Music at 140 Locke St.S.? http://lockestreetshops.com/Locke_Street_Shops/PicksandSticks.html

A platter on which to serve dad's "catch of the day"?

...or perhaps a stained glass fish to remember the "one that got away"!

Maybe dad would appreciate a framed dichroic glass art tile...

or a pottery bird house for the nature lover?

Maybe a unique handcrafted mug from one of our Textures potters, and a bag of freshly-ground beans from Starbucks at 158 Locke St.S. would be a relief from the daily grind?

Somewhere to organize dad's ties?

Why not select a Textures platter to hold special grilling steaks from Locke St. Meats & Deli at 205 Locke St. S. for your home chef?

This stained glass panel would be excellent for the sailor in your family!

If dad's an ice cream fan, why not this framed textile art along with a gift certificate for some of the home made ice cream from Shirin's Fine Foods at 139 Locke St. S.?http://lockestreetshops.com/Locke_Street_Shops/Shirins.html

You could tell dad to "go fly a kite"...

...or sock it to him with these fun hand-knitted socks!

Do you think a handmade tie-dyed T-shirt more to your dad's liking?

Textures has a wide selection of turned wood wine stoppers, which would be a nice compliment to a bottle of his favourite wine!

Does your dad need an attractive dish to catch his loose pocket change?

There are plenty of spectacular nature photos for the outdoorsman in your life!

We have a beautiful selection of turned wood bowls in different wood finishes!

We know your dad is sweet enough already, but maybe some fresh local honeys would be nice?

This framed vintage car photo would rev the engine of an auto aficionado...

Show dad he is the "big cheese" with a deluxe wood cutting board from Textures, and a selection of cheeses from the Cheese Shop on Locke at 190 Locke St. S.!

Your dad can write down his words of wisdom in a one-of-a-kind leather or cloth-bound journal...

Or maybe an original framed piece of stone art from Texture,s and a gift certificate for a bike tune up from
Bike Locke at 246 Locke St. S. is more dad's speed?

Whatever your father's interests are, we are sure to have something he would like.

And why not top off your one-of-a-kind handmade gift with a card as unique as he is?  We have many to choose from!
